How to Take Care of Orchid

If you want to learn how to take care of orchid species, the most important step is to realise that orchids grow all over the world and each orchid species is adapted to a certain environment. Following general guidelines claiming to suit all possible orchids is therefore not a good idea. Orchids from the same genera often even similar requirements since they are closely related and typically hail from the same region, but even within a genus there can be significant differences. The proper Phalaenopsis orchid care will for instance wary somewhat since the members of this genus grow all the way from the Himalayan Mountains in Asia to the northern parts of Australia.

The same is true for the genus Cymbidium; these orchids are also native to tropical and subtropical parts of Asia and northern Australia and the ideal Cymbidium orchid care will therefore vary a bit depending on which particular species you keep. Generally speaking, Cymbidium orchids are however found growing in higher elevations and they will therefore prefer fairly chilly conditions – at least compared to tropical orchids from the lowlands. The night temperature should ideally be lowered down to 50-65˚ F (10-18˚ C) when you keep Cymbidium orchids. As long as the orchids are provided with cool nights, they will normally handle fairly high day temperatures without problem.
