The History Of Alpine Skiing

It is interesting to read of the history of alpine skiing. Supposedly, people first became interested in snowshoeing. It was only after that that alpine skiing rose to popularity.

Sondre Norheim is a Norwegian who is now considered to be the original creator of modern day skiing. Norheim invented ski binding, so skiers were then able to make turns while skiing downhill. This is what we know as the slalom.

Originally, this technique was used to help people get around and transport things from one place to another in the snow. However, with the invention and constant improvement of ski binding, and people’s success at mastering the use of the skis, it turned into more of a game. People enjoyed the challenge of being the fastest or most creative, and thus, the sport of skiing evolved.

It is only in the last 100 years or so that Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, has become more common. It was mostly a European sport. However, the people and places that enjoy Alpine skiing are constantly increasing in number. Many areas even feature resorts that are open all year long and offer vacationer the opportunity to ski during any season.
